IGANGA DISTRICTIganga was part of Busoga at Independence in 1962. In 1975 it gained district status and it became South Busoga District in the then Busoga Province. It was named Iganga in 1980. Present day Bugiri, Kamuli and Mayuge made up Busoga District. LocationIt boarders the districts of Bugiri and Tororo in the East, Jinja and Mayuge in the West and North West and Pallisa in the north East. PopulationThe district has over 716,311 people, 371,891 of which are female and 344,420 are male. Main Language; the main Language is Lusoga. Economic ActivitiesAgriculture with the main emphasis on food crops; Millet, Maize, Sorghum, Rice, Beans, Irish, Cassava, Bananas and Peas. Cash crops include; Coffee and Cotton. Fruits and Vegetables such as; Oranges, Tomatoes and Cabbage. Fishing is carried out on Lake Victoria. Banks; Stanbic Uganda Ltd-1, Bank of Baroda. Education Services The district has a total of 356 primary schools with 314 government, 31 private and 14 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 62 schools, 13 are government, 28 private and 21 community. Health servicesThe district has 43 Government dispensaries (II), 20 health centres (III) at county, 4 health centres (IV) at sub-district and 1 hospital. More so, it has 26 private/NGO dispensaries, 31 clinics and 1 health centre (III). There is a Government District Hospital with 117 beds and Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau-St Francis, Buluba with 164 beds. Transport network The district is accessed by road and rail. The road from Jinja to Iganga town is tarmacked. The district is well connected with feeder-roads in the southern part that boarders the lake. Tourist AttractionsThe district has caves and forest which are tourist attractions. Nenda Hill; contains the shrine of the Bazungu (white people) and is a view point for the surrounding plains. Lake Victoria is another attraction and fishing constitutes a major activity.
