JINJA DISTRICTJinja was part of Busoga District at Independence. Under the 19741 provisional Administrations, it became a district in Busoga province. LocationIt borders Iganga and Kamuli in the North, Mukono in the south west, Kayunga in the West, Mayuge in the East and Lake Victoria in the South. It is the western potion of the former Busoga District. PopulationThe district has over 413,937 people, 206,709 of which are female and 207,287 are male. Economic ActivitiesThe rural areas pf Jinja District are Agricultural producers while a great deal of industrial activity takes place in Jinja Municipality. Food crops grown include Beans, cassava, maize, millet, yams, cow peas, and Sorghum. Cash crops include Coffee, Cotton and Sugar cane. Fishing is also done on the River Nile and Lake Victoria. Education ServicesThe district has a total of 151 primary schools with 105 government, 35 private and 11 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 56 schools, 11 are government, 29 private and 16 community. Health ServicesThe district has 36 Government dispensaries (II), 13 health centres (III) at county, 4 health centres (IV) at sub-district and 1 hospital. More so, it has 9 private/NGO dispensaries, 26 clinics and 3 health centres (III) and 2 hospitals. Jinja Hospital with 443 beds, Kakira Hospital with 100 beds. Tourist AttractionsThere is a source o the Nile, a spot where the Nile begins its journey through Uganda, Sudan and finally Egypt. Transport NetworkThere is a rail line running through the district from Kampala to Iganga. The district has both tarmac and murram roads. It is linked to Kampala, Kamuli, Mayuge and Iganga Districts by tarmac roads. There is an airfield which is run by Jinja Municipality.
