YUMBE DISTRICT

Formerly part of Arua District. In 2000, Aringa county of Arua District was given District status and named Yumbe District.

Location

It borders Moyo and Adjumani in east, Arua in the west and south and Sudan in the north.

Population

The district has over 99,794 people. 51,467 females and 48,327 Males.

Main Languages

Alur, Lugbara, Kakwa and Madi

Economic Activities

Agriculture with main emphasis on food crops such as millet, potatoes, beans, and cassava. Cash crops include Tobacco. Fruits and vegetables include Tomatoes, paw paws, avocados, mangoes, oranges, lime, onions and cabbages.

Education Services

The district has a total of 102 primary schools with 77 government, 3 private and 22 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 11 schools, 2 are government, 1 private and 8 community.

Health services

The district has 6 Government dispensaries (II), 6 health centres (III) at county, no health centre (IV) at sub-district and no hospital. More so, it has no private/NGO dispensaries, 2 health centres (III) and a Government District hospital-Yumbe Hospital with 08 beds.

The endangered mountain gorillas are almost exitinct with only 750 in number shared between Bwindi National Park, Parc de volcanoes National park of Rwanda and Virunga of Congo.A safari to Uganda's remaining mountain gorillas in Bwindi NP is memorable experience that contribute greatly to the survival of these mountain gorillas.More information on the mountain gorillas
