Mubende was part of Buganda Kingdom at Independence in 1967. Following abolition of Kingdoms in 1967, It became on of the districts carved out of Buganda Kingdom.

Location

It borders the districts of Kiboga and Luwero in the North and north East separately, Kibale in the north-West, Kyenjojo in the West and Sembabule and Mpigi in the South. The main language is Luganda.

Population

It has a total of 706,256 people with 354,993and 351,263 females.

Economic activities

The major economic activity in Mubende district is Agriculture with emphasis on food crops like Sweet potatoes, Beans, Cassava, Maize, Bananas, ground nuts etc. Cash crops include coffee and tea. More so fruits and vegetables like Tomatoes, Onions and cabbage are grown in the Mpigi.

Education services

It has a total of 439 primary schools with 299 government, 93 private and 47 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 75 schools, 21 are government, 20 private and 34 community.

Health services

It has 27 Government dispensaries (II), 11 Government health centres(III), 14 private dispensaries, 42 clinics. It also has 1 Government hospital in with 100 beds, Mityana hospital with 100 beds and 5 health centres.

Tourist Attractions

Nakayima shrine the base of which has large root buttresses forming nooks and fissures sited on top of Mubende Hill about 4 km out of town. The 213 m hill with a flat table top where ancient palace once stood provides an excellent view of Mubende town and the surrounding area. The shrine is visited by the people paying homage to the matriarch Nakayima of the Bachwezi, believed to be semi-gods.
