This district was created after protracted agitation by the people of the area. One of the reasons the people advanced their own district was that administrative headquarters in Tororo was distant and affected service delivery to the people.
Population
The district has over 228,181 people, 118,257 of which are female and 109,924 are male.
Main Languages
Lusamia-Lugwe
Economic activities
The practice agriculture wit the main emphasis on Food crops such as Rice, finger millet, sorghum, bananas, sweet potatoes, beans, peas and cassava. Cash Crops include, cotton and sunflower.
Education services
The district has a total of 117 primary schools with 104 government, 10 private and 3 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 25 schools, 11 are government, 11 private and 3 community.
Health Services
The district has 7 Government dispensaries (II), 7 health centres (III) at county, 2 health centres (IV) at sub-district and no hospital. More so, it has 1 private/NGO dispensary, 19 clinics and 1 health centre (III).
